On April 1st I read how Matt Raible was going to work for Microsoft. Not thinking about the fact that it was April Fools Day, I completely bought it. What's even funnier is that today I saw his blog post about how it is not true and how CNET actually reported it in a story! I also feel a little stupid because tonight I told a couple of co-workers that Raible was going to work for Microsoft. :-)

Our brand new baby, Sarah Jende Leberknight, was born September 17, 2004 at 9:09 PM. Check out some photos in our photo gallery. It was unbelievable to say the least, and just awesome! Ann Marie did great! She went into the hospital at around 4:30-5:00 and just about four hours later we had a new baby girl. And since we had not found out the sex, it was a complete surprise. Apparently I interpreted the cryptic sonogram correctly - the sonographer wrote LO and RO at one point, and I said that meant Left Ovary and Right Ovary so it must be a girl. I don't think that was actually true but I liked telling everyone that anyway!

We are now at home and Sarah and her mommy are both sleeping peacefully! Soon, however, I think things might get a little more hectic around here, though!

Singley and I finally got Gallery installed tonight. We had failed in two previous attempts, the first time because we underestimated the amount of time it would take and the second time because we were having trouble getting NetPBM, an image manipulation toolkit, installed. It turned out the problem was that NetPBM was placing the
.so
library files in its own location, specifically in
/usr/local/pbm/lib
. Unfortunately this meant that the NetPBM executables were unable to find the
.so
libraries and therefore refused to work.

After mucking around a bit we had to change LD_LIBRARY_PATH for the Gallery installation to include
/usr/local/pbm/lib
. After that everything worked perfectly. Sometimes it is amazing anything actually works, what with all the ridiculous amounts of complexity and dependencies that are present in complex systems.

Later I came across this article by David Barr titled "Why LD_LIBRARY_PATH is bad". After reading it I tend to agree. The caveat is that I am a developer, not a systems adminstrator and would never claim to be any sort of an expert in these matters.

Anyway, the final result of our efforts is at our photo gallery.

Anyway, since Singley has been bugging me to post the first useless entry I am finally getting around to it.
